The coffee giant, Starbucks, has announced a plan to stop using single use plastic straws by 2020.
Emily Alexander set out to design a lid that would showcase the delicious cold foam the company introduced in the U.S. this year. Little did she know, that her team’s design would help reduce “more than 1 billion plastic straws per year” from Starbucks stores. You can read their full statement here.
Speaking of plastic, this month Seattle’s plastic ban took full effect. Last year, the city introduced an ordinance that would ban plastic straws and utensils in the city, requiring business to provide recyclable, compostable, or no dining utensils at all. Canada has banned animal testing for cosmetics! Following after Norway, India, Israel, and the entire European Union, Canada’s Senate just passed Bill S-214, the Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act. Basically, the bill states that animal testing and the sale of cosmetics developed or manufactured using animal testing is prohibited in the country.
With a giant push from Canadian cruelty-free companies like Lush and The Body Shop paired with public outcry, things are moving in a positive direction! Although a date hasn’t been set, it’s safe to say that it won’t be too long until the bill becomes law.
